Gardening Tip of the Month:

February is traditionally the month in which we plant roses. A gift of a rose plant would be a lasting Valentine’s gift for that special When purchasing container grown roses, such as those we offer, you will eliminate transplant shock often experienced by bare-root roses. Roses need at least 6 to 8 hours of sunshine. Good air circulation around the plant will head off fungal problems. Many of the smaller shrub roses are suitable for container growing. Prune roses by removing any dead canes and trimming no more than one third of the shrub at any one time. Start fertilizing roses two weeks before last frost date and at 4 to 6 week intervals after that. For ideal fertilizers, come in and browse the many organic and inorganic products that Alspaugh’s offers. We also offer organic compost to amend your soil before planting. MiracleGro Garden Soil for Roses is also available. Complement your roses with beautiful annuals and perennials.

Crepe Myrtle Pruning Tips:
February is also the month in which a seasonal phenomenon takes place, that of pruning the crepes. Generally speaking, crepe myrtles need no pruning other than removal of dead branches, crossing branches, sucker growth and seed removal. Why then all the fuss about pruning them every February? It is believed that this practice will entice heavy bloom in the summer. This simply is not the case! The unnecessary topping of these stately plants makes the plants weak and disease-prone. It also succeeds in making them look totally unsightly and downright ugly. So, stop this yearly "Crepe Murder" and prune your trees only when needed to address the aforementioned situations. Crepe Myrtles should be chosen for their eventual size and color of bloom. If your crepe is too tall or wide for the area in which it is planted, consider planting one of a more appropriate size. Come in to the garden center and allow us to help you chose and order the appropriate size tree for your site. Also pick up your copy of how to properly prune your crepe myrtles. Show off your gardening savvy with beautifully shaped crepe myrtles that are healthy and blooming happily.
